Reproduction & Health Equity (R&HE)

A group of people in a classroom, standing and smiling at the camera

The Reproduction & Health Equity working group was formed in the rapidly changing legal landscape surrounding reproductive health, rights, and justice in the wake of the U.S. Dobbs decision. Between legislative state bans, state level ballot amendments and court cases abortion and reproductive healthcare technologies and their associated professional worlds, distribution chains, access and affordability, and legal rights are in flux. The working group explores the impact of this rapid change by fostering interdisciplinary collaboration for research and practice at the intersection of reproductive justice, healthcare access, and legal frameworks to better understand how these changes impact health equity across diverse communities. In Spring 2025, HEI begins a R&HE fellowship program for faculty and MA-level students at SFSU and host visiting scholars to develop program activities and design collaborative projects throughout the academic year.

As a collective, we have broad interest in exploring diverse facets of reproductive justice, including but not limited to:

  • The intersection of heat waves and reproductive health
  • Reproductive labor and environmental (in)justice
  • Inequities in access to infertility treatments
  • Queer reproduction and families
  • Legal and political dimensions of abortion rights
  • Gendered nature of criminalization of parenting (system impacted families/family courts)
  • Access to (medication) abortion
